THE HOLY SEE: "THE WEAKNESS OF MULTILATERALISM" AND "DOUBTS" ON THE POSSIBILITY TO REACH THE GOALS OF THE MILLENNIUM

"Bilateralism is growing more and more, and lots of multilateral institutions – such as UNO, WTO, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank – are showing signs of weakness and tiredness", while "no institution is currently emerging to replace them". This alarm was given by the Papal Academy of Social Sciences, on the eve of its XIII plenary session, which is opening in the Vatican tomorrow (lasting until 1 May) on the subject: "Charity and justice in the relationships between peoples and countries". Apart from the "remarkable increase in the social and moral scourge of terrorism", it is written in the introduction to the plenary assembly of the Vatican body, which today was shown to the press", and from the "weakness of multilateralism", globalization makes widespread poverty emerge, as well as the gradual "crumbling of the consensus which had been achieved in relation to the Goals of the Millennium". As for those goals, "now, there are remarkable doubts about the possibility to be really able to reach them within scheduled times". (To be continued)
