EUROPE: THE EU JOINS THE INTERNATIONAL THE HAGUE CONFERENCE

"The EU’s joining the The Hague Conference will give more consistency to international private law and will make life easier for those who wish to move abroad": Franco Frattini, commissioner for freedom, security and justice, comments the Community’s joining the The Hague Conference on international private law, reasserting "its role as an international player in the sphere of civil justice". The deputy president of the Executive adds: "Our goal is to make the citizens’ life easier by establishing clear rules as to the judges’ jurisdiction, the applicable laws and the acknowledgement and enforcement of judicial orders, not only within the EU but all over the world". The The Hague Conference is an intergovernmental organisation of 65 states, including all the EU member states, and representing all continents. The statutory purpose of the Conference is to "work towards the progressive standardisation of international private laws". This means, according to the EU Commission, "to find a shared approach to a wide number of areas, from civil procedure to business law and marriage law, from people’s status to the protection of the family and children".
