BENEDICT XVI IN BRAZIL: FRA GALVAO PROCLAIMED SAINT REAWAKENED "A WISH FOR FAITHFULNESS"

With reference to the wording of the consecration of Fra Galvao, “You should rather take my life before I offend your blessed Son, my Lord!”, Benedict XVI – as he celebrated Mass for the canonisation of Fra Galvao – commented that these words "sound relevant to us, who live in a life so full of hedonism" and added: "These are strong words, words uttered by a passionate soul, words that should be part of the daily life of every Christian, no matter whether a priest or a lay man, and they reawaken a wish for faithfulness to God, both inside and outside marriage". As to the dimension of married life, he added: "The world needs crystal-clear lives, clear souls, simple minds, that refuse to be considered objects of pleasure. One must say no to those social communication media that make fun of the holiness of marriage and virginity before marriage". In closing his homily, he recalled the Vigil of Prayer of Marienfeld, in Germany: "Before a multitude of young people, I wanted to qualify the saints of our era as true reformers. And I added: Only from the Saints, only from God do the true revolution, the decisive change of the world, come".
