EUROPE: REHN (EU COMMISSION), "NOW SERBIA IS CLOSER TO THE EU"

"Serbia is distancing itself from its nationalist past and moving closer to its European future": Olli Rehn, EU Accession Commissioner, comments the new Belgrade government, that brings together "the democratic political forces" of the country. Rehn states he intends to go to Belgrade, partly for a possible resumption of the negotiations for the EU Accession Agreement that were suspended last year due to the Serbian government’s non cooperation with the International Tribunal of The Hague for the crimes committed at the time of the former Yugoslavia. The president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, René van der Linden, also expressed "satisfaction for the agreement about the new Serbian government". Last Friday Serbia became president on duty of the Committee of the Ministers of the CoE: "I hope – continues van der Linden – this event will put an end to the political ambiguity of these last times. In addition, I hope the new government will work hard to pursue the implementation of the democratic reforms, in the interest of all Serbians". The Permanent Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the CoE will meet in Belgrade on May 24th "for a debate with the new government leaders".
