HOLY SEE: MGR. MIGLIORE (UN OBSERVER), IT IS URGENT TO ACKNOWLEDGE "THE RIGHTS OF THE NATIVE POPULATIONS" (2)

"Although respecting the positions of "those who raise objections to the current draft, mgr. Migliore stated that "the Holy See intends to insist on the special importance of such deed and encourages the UN member states to be flexible and socially farsighted in order to reach an agreement during the current session of the General Assembly". A gesture that "would be beneficial not only to the poorer and most outcast citizens", but "would also increase peace between peoples and would promote everyone’s fair and equal enjoyment of human rights". "The rush to the exploitation of the resources, which we are witnessing in many places, distresses the natural habitat", remarked mgr. Migliore, while "political, social or economic benefits for the populations from whom such resources are taken are very few". The lack of "necessary consensus to the approval of the Drip", wishes the delegate of the Holy See, "should not be an excuse to postpone the defence of the legitimate rights" of such populations.
