EUROPE: DAPHNE III, EU PROGRAMME TO OPPOSE VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN AND WOMEN

"Contributing to the prevention and fight against all kinds of violence taking place in the public or private sphere, against children, young people and women": the most important objective of the new community programme, Daphne III, is included in the report drawn up by a German member of Parliament, Lissy Gröner. The report is going to be discussed by the European parliament on Monday, during the opening of the session in Strasbourg. Among the kinds of violence which the programme intends to oppose, "by adopting measures of prevention, and by supporting and defending victims and groups at risk", there are also "sexual exploitation and trade of human beings". The Assembly should approve the position of the proposer, making a compromise with the position expressed by the Council. The proposed actions, valid until 2013, would receive funds amounting to 116 million euros for seven years, with respect to the 50 million of Daphne II for five years. The objectives of Daphne III, through widespread sensitization within the EU, aim also at "promoting a policy of no tolerance with respect to violence", and at "fostering assistance to victims, encouraging the denunciation of the events of violence to competent authorities".
