BENEDICT XVI: "THE PRIVILEGED WAY TO KNOW GOD IS LOVE"

"The privileged way to know God is love", and "there is no true ‘scientia Christi’ without falling in love with Him". This was said by the Pope, who, in today’s general audience – before about 20 thousand people who took shelter from the rain behind multicoloured umbrellas –, lingered again on the figure of Origen, an Alexandrian Doctor of the second and third century, and in particular on his lessons "on prayer and the Church", starting from the "Treatise on prayer" in which the author interlaces "all the time his exegetic and theological production with experiences and suggestions on the ‘oratio". According to Origen, explained Benedict XVI, "the intelligence of the Scriptures demands, even more than study, intimacy with Christ and prayer", because "only through a lively contact with Christ, can one understand the Scriptures". "In order to understand the things of God, the oratio is absolutely necessary", said the Pope, exhorting people to devote themselves to the "lectio divina" with "loyalty and unshakeable faith in God".
