HOLY LAND: THE POPE’S APPEAL, MGR. TWAL (PATRIARCHATE), "IT’S THE HEART OF ALL CONFLICTS"

“Wonderful words”. This is how mgr. Fuad Twal, archbishop coadjutor of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, comments to SIR the appeal for the end of violence on the Gaza Strip, that was made by the Pope yesterday at the Regina Caeli. “Benedict XVI – states the archbishop – reminds the world that the crisis in the Holy Land is the heart of all Middle Eastern conflicts, because it has religious repercussions as well. If a solution is found, it will be for everyone’s good, first and foremost for the Israelis and Palestinians”. A "difficult" solution, he explains, "because the Americans are giving priority to Iraq", but it is not “impossible”, because "something is moving across the world". "In the last few days, there has been a meeting between the counterparts on the Dead Sea, there’s been the initiative of the Arab countries, with the opening of Olmert, who is busy studying it and making a proposal. Something is moving, then”. However, recalls mgr. Twal, “the crisis is not only what is apparent in its most dramatic aspects, but is a whole story of concern and violence. We must not only look at the tree that we have in front, but at the whole forest that is behind it”. “I confide in the Israelis and Palestinians – he concludes –. It is the confidence that comes from the cross and the prayer of the world that must not leave the Holy Land”.
