ITALY: MSGR. BAGNASCO (PRESIDENT OF CEI), "I AM ESCORTED, NOT BESIEGED"

"I am really serene. I am escorted, but not besieged". This morning, during the press conference at the end of the 57th general assembly of Italian bishops, Msgr. Angelo Bagnasco, president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, expressed his sentiments in that way. And he is facing the current period, under escort, in this way. For a few weeks, actually, the president of CEI and archbishop of Genoa has been accompanied with the men of his escort, because of the threats and the intimidating acts addressed to him. "The people’s affection – said Msgr. Bagnasco – multiplies. The people surround their bishop with freedom and affection. I am sorry for the included symbolic message. I hope the situation will resolve itself soon, or rather, very soon". Finally, Msgr. Bagnasco said to be "very serene", and that he has "no difficulty in approaching the people, or to be approached by them".
