The Synod of the Chaldean Church is opening on June 1st, in Al Qosh, a townlet in the North of Iraq, 25 kilometres from Mosul. This piece of news was confirmed to SIR by the Chaldean procurator at the Holy See, Father Philip Najim. The works will definitely include fundamental issues such as "the situation of the Christians in Iraq, the future of the Babel College Seminary, and the condition of the dioceses, both in Iraq and outside it". "The bishops are really worried stated the Chaldean procurator about the ongoing persecution against the Christian minority. The Holy Father is taking care of this question. He often talks about the current situation in Iraq. The synod is taking place in a crucial moment for Iraq. I hope this synod will somewhat be able to arouse public interest and the international community on what is happening in the country. Sometimes, we seem to get used to seeing and hearing about dead people and massacres: this cannot and must not happen".
