"The French people have decided to break with the habits of the past; to these people, I want to give back their pride. Nicholas Sarkozy, the nominee for the Ump, is the new president of the Republic of France. He won with 53.28% of votes, versus 46.72% of the Socialist nominee Ségolène Royal. Record-breaking turn-up all over the country yesterday, where 84.80% of voters went to the polls. After publishing the official figures, the new president made a short speech to his supporters, insisting on the international placement of France, next to the EU, the United States and with an eye on the Mediterranean. Sarkozy added: "I wish to make an appeal to the European allies; from tonight France is back in Europe".
