IRAQ: MGR. JAMMO (US CHALDEIANS), "WE CAN’T WATCH CHRISTIANS DISAPPEAR AND DO NOTHING"

Today, Iraqi Christians live like "a flock of sheep amidst the wolves". The biblical figure, to describe the living conditions of the Iraqi Christian minority, has been suggested by mgr. Sarhad Yawsip Jammo of the Chaldeian diocese of California (Usa). "On that historical circumstance – writes the bishop on the website www.kaldu.org, relayed and translated by Baghdadhope –, the Zoroastrian fundamentalists used to punish the Christian flock and its leaders by burning down the churches, killing the faithful and levying special taxes. In this day and age, the Muslim fundamentalists in Iraq are pursuing the same policy with the same means". "However, today mankind can’t pretend to ignore or watch the Christian population disappear and do nothing, as Christians are fully entitled to live in their ancestral land and have always been loyal to that country". According to mgr. Jammo, "ideas and attitudes of good will are not enough. Except for Kurdistan and the neighbouring Nineveh Plain, no place is safe for Christians in Iraq. The time has come to take effective measures". This is why, he concludes, "the Chaldeian Church and the civilians who represent its congregation must propose solutions for a peaceful, prosperous future for the people and the Church".
