BENEDICT XVI IN ASSISI: TO THE YOUNG, DO NOT SETTLE FOR "FRAGMENTS OF THE TRUTH"

Two representatives of the young spoke to Benedict XVI about some of the problems of young people, their difficulties in building a future for themselves and above all their trouble discerning the truth. "The Gospel – stated the Pope – points at Christ as at the truth: the truth of God and at the same time the truth of man. As it happened for Francis, Christ speaks to our hearts as well". "We – he went on – risk spending our whole life deafened by loud but empty voices, we risk overlooking His voice, the only voice that counts because it is the only one that saves. We settle for fragments of the truth or let ourselves be seduced by truths that are only seemingly such". "Then, is it any surprise – he wondered – if we find ourselves surrounded by a contradictory world, which, although amidst so many nice things, so often disappoints us, with its expressions of triviality, injustice, violence? Without God, the world loses its foundations and its direction". Hence his invitation to not be afraid "to make like Francis, especially in his ability to go back to yourselves. He succeeded in creating silence around himself, by stopping and listening to God’s Word. Step by step, he let himself be taken by hand and guided to the full encounter with Jesus, until he managed to turn it into the treasure and light of his life".
