SIR EUROPE: "AIDS AND DIALOGUE FOR PEACE IN PALESTINE". THE POSITIONS OF PARTIES IN STRASBOURG

"There are two Palestinian states repudiating each other today. The international community, together with the European Union, must support President Abbas and the new emergency government led by Salem Fayyad": José Ignacio Salafranca, team leader of the European Popular Party, expressed his opinion on the situation in the Middle East, which was the subject of a debate taking place in Strasbourg yesterday. This issue will also be discussed by the EU Council on 21 and 22 June in Brussels. The Spanish politician stated: "Making every possible effort to find out a lasting and fair solution in the Middle East is up to the EU, the UNO, the Arab League, and the Quartet". Martin Schulz, leader of Europe’s socialists, complains about the fact that the Union suspended aids for Palestinians, "though the government led by Hamas was legitimate, since it was the outcome of regularly carried out elections. Why thus was it an economic block imposed?". "Dialogue – added the German MEP – is the sole way to find out a pacific solution, and history showed us that only through dialogue it is possible to get out of violence". Therefore, Schulz declared to be against the idea of sending European troops to the region, believing that "it is more useful to use funds for aids rather than for soldiers". (To be continued)
