SIR EUROPE: EUROBAROMETRE, "TWO THIRDS OF CITIZENS IN FAVOUR OF THE CONSTITUTION"

” “"Two thirds of Europeans are in favour of the concept of EU Constitution. 69% of citizens say to be either very or quite optimistic about the future of the Union". The presentation of the spring research by Eurobarometre just before the summit which is going to take a decision about the future of the Fundamental Chart, was the centre of attention in Strasburg (where the parliamentary session is going on) and in Brussels, where the meetings of the "sherpas" are continuing. The sherpas are diplomats entrusted with the task of reaching a compromise on the treaty which may pave the way for agreements between heads of state and governments. "Eurobarometre – comments Margot Wallström, vice president of the Commission – shows us a greater optimism in the EU with respect to its future and to what citizens expect" from community institutions. "I hope the imminent Council of Europe will translate this optimism into an agreement on reform, an essential fact to concretize the ambitions and the expectations of citizens with respect to the EU". According to the experts of Eurobarometre, the atmosphere of trust must also be considered "in relation to how citizens judge the economic situations in their own countries", generally improving.
