"European cultures. The challenge of diversity and unity" is the theme of the eight Summer Campus of the Commission of the EU Bishops Conferences (Comece), due to take place in the Training centre of Seggau, near Graz (Austria), from June 30th to July 14th. The course will be held just like a university campus, with two courses and modular workshops for 80 students whose attendance will be recognised in their native countries as credits (Ects – European credit transfer system). In explaining why they chose this theme, Manfred Priesching, sociologist from the University of Graz, said that "sometimes diversity is an asset, sometimes it is a weakness: an asset, because the specific dynamics and the newness of European are rooted in the diversity of the cultures that exist there. A weakness, because it is difficult to build a society that is the fruit of such different peoples and communities". "A united Europe he concluded is not a product that history takes us home, postage paid, but a model to be patiently and fervently developed".
