SIR EUROPA: CARD. ERDÖ (CCEE) TO UNIVERSITY LECTURERS, A "NEW HUMANISM WITHOUT GOD" IS IMPOSSIBLE

"The story of the birth of John the Baptist can give courage to all of us, who are university lecturers and intellectuals in today’s world". It was said yesterday by card. Péter Erdö, president of the Council of the European Bishops Conferences (Ccee), in his sermon at Mass in Saitn John Lateran, on the last day of the European meeting of university lecturers, about "A new humanism for Europe. The role of Universities", promoted by Ccee for the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. "If, over the last few months – commented card. Erdö –, we have been looking for the place of Christianity and our mission within the European culture, which is as tired as it is fascinating, however we have to admit that human calculations are not enough". According to the cardinal, "as we look for a new humanism for Europe, we cannot look for a God-less one. While the human efforts deliberately disregard the existence of God, they will not get rid, despite actual results in the details, of the sorry shadow of the lack of meaning and value of the universe and of the existence of all mankind". According to the cardinal, when today we speak of human dignity, "sometimes we fail to clearly identify our ontological dignity, which is an integral part of our nature, which comes from the fact all human beings have been created in God’s image".
