SIR EUROPA: UNIVERSITY MEETING, GIORDANO (CCEE) AND TREANOR (COMECE), "CHRISTIANS MORE PRESENT"

"Continuing the development of a thinking about the new humanism is essential to evangelisation in Europe, we must aim at the unity of knowledge, that is, at finding again a unity between the true, the beautiful and the good". This is the invitation of mgr. Aldo Giordano, secretary general of Ccee, the Council of European Bishops Conferences, at the meeting of the European university lecturers, promoted by Ccee and ended in Rome yesterday. "The network of universities – added mgr. Giordano – must make them more effective in serving the growth of Europe and in their worldwide bent". An appeal that has been taken up by mgr. Noel Treanor, secretary general of Comece, the Commission of the EU Bishops Conferences. "It is not easy – he stated – but it is essential to develop, within the European institutions, the Christian standing on the subjects of life, the family, migration, freedom of education, religious freedom …". According to mgr. Treanor, Christians, and especially Catholics, must be "more present in the public debate on Europe, and they must be so at a high level, with broad responsibilities. It is vital to have high-profile experts who know how to give future-oriented inputs to the European policies. From this perspective, the universities must outline the contents, methods and timing of a specific European training as soon as possible".
