BENEDICT XVI: STEM CELLS, "ENCOURAGING" SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, BUT "NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF OTHER HUMAN BEINGS"

"Scientific research must certainly be encouraged and promoted, unless this happens at the expense of other human beings, whose dignity is inviolable ever since the first stages of existence". It was confirmed by the Pope today, at the end of today’s general audience, during the greetings in Italian. In particular, the Pope addressed the participants in the International meeting on adult stem cells, set up by "Università La Sapienza" in Rome. Such event, said Benedict XVI, "has the objective to develop the autologous cellular therapy within the heart, by using adult stem cells". "As for this question – added the Pope, – the position of the Church, supported by reason and science, is quite clear: scientific research must certainly be encouraged and promoted, unless this happens at the expense of other human beings, whose dignity is inviolable ever since the first stages of existence".
