The part of the agenda of the Portuguese presidency of the EU (which will replace the German presidency on July 1st 2007) about the role of the European Union in the world is very wide. Its common goals, according to Manuel Lobo Antunes, must be supported and cast into a world that is "more and more interconnected". "The peace and security we experience must be ensured by the response that Europe will give to the global challenges". The Portuguese delegate of the Executive added: "Facing climate change, the promotion of economic and social development, effectively handling migration, fighting organised crime and the trafficking of people, fighting terrorism, are some of the challenges we need to address, in the awareness that they demand a leadership and shared responses". In its six months’ agenda, Lisbon included a few specific sections about relations with the Mediterranean countries, Africa and Brazil.
