SIR EUROPA: TUTU (PEACE NOBEL WINNER), "MAY THE EU AND THE UN BEHAVE TO DARFOUR LIKE THE GOOD SAMARITAN" (2)

In his speech at the European Parliament, the Anglican archbishop Tutu stated, also about the state of Darfur: "I think everyone wants to see Africa free and wealthy. This is why I am hopeful. But we have to act with determination, calling everyone to do their duty"; "they include China, which has strong, growing interests in Africa". In her speech, Jody Williams described the "responsibilities of the international community" in the African region, where "so far no one has managed to protect the civilian population". According to Williams, Darfur needs "protection, water and food. Helpless people call for security. And collective rape as a weapon to bend the local populations must be stopped". The Nobel Prize winner gave the EU a few "tips" for an action "that will deliver": "We must have a coordinated peacemaking action and a consistent diplomatic action, then involve people and society; provide material aids and appropriate resources to face such a serious situation, with special attention to the refugees". The discussion with the MEPs brought to the fore other instances, for which political and humanitarian intervention is to be wished for: they include Palestine, Myanmar and Chad.
