SIR EUROPE: BRUSSELS, INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE RIGHTS OF THE DISABLED

"Education, work, equal opportunities. Higher independency for disabled people": it is the subject of the international conference promoted by the German presidency of the European Union on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th June in Berlin. The initiative, made known the presidency, "is within the programmes of the European Year of equal opportunities for everybody". "The meeting, based on the new UNO Convention on the rights of disabled people", will include "the civil society, social partners and representatives of community institutions". "As first international instrument including instructions concerning education, training, work and the principles of non discrimination, the Convention will give new energy on a world level" to the policies for the disabled people. Among the purposes of the Conference of Berlin, there are the instructions to render such document operating and effective, "starting from a rapid process of ratification". At the same time with the meeting, there will also be an assembly of the EU ministers taking care of the rights of the disabled on June 11th. The German vice chancellor, Franz Müntefering, will preside over the Conference. Among the participants, there will be Vladimír Špidla, EU work and equal opportunities commissioner, and Yannis Vardakastanis, president of the European Forum of disabled people.
