SIR EUROPE: LACK OF WATER AND DROUGHT, A FEW PROPOSALS BY THE EU COMMISSION

For every human being, "in daily life, it is fundamental to access water of good quality and in sufficient quantity. And the majority of business activities depending on water have the same need". The EU Commission notes that "during the latest thirty years, lack of water and drought have become problems of crucial importance for the Union, and the current climate changes should worsen the situation". In such context, today the Executive will issue a notification pointing out "the first series of interventions meant to mitigate the problems connected with lack of water in several regions" of the Old Continent. "The proposed solutions – according to a source of the Commission – are linked with an effective use of available water", waste reduction, infrastructure investments (aqueducts), and with "a system of early alarm with a view to possible drought periods". Moreover, lack of water "influences both the population and several economic sectors, such as agriculture, tourism, industry, energy and river transport". There are also remarkable consequences for biodiversity, forest fire, and soil impoverishment. ” ” ” “
