The Council of Europe as the "guardian of rights"; the problems sometimes voiced by the citizens "in distinguishing the European Union from the CoE": these are two of the topics addressed by Terry Davis, secretary general of the organisation based on Strasbourg, in his speech for the opening of the Summer Campus for Democracy, called "Projects for Europe". Until July 6th, over 600 people, explain the promoters, "from the political schools of 15 different countries" will discuss democracy, the constitutional state, the protection and promotion of human rights. The schedule covers many lectures, including one by Boris Tadic, president of Serbia and president on duty of the CoE, and one by Thomas Hammarberg, commissioner for human rights. "The event will host several conferences and workshops by outstanding international figures, such as George Soros, president of the Open Society Foundation, and Ivan Vejvoda, executive director of the Balkan Trust for Democracy". On Thursday 5th July, a round table "will focus on the question: 50 years after the Treaties of Rome, where does the European project stand?", attended by Jean-Dominique Giuliani, president of the Robert Schumann Foundation, Adrian Severin, MEP, Gabriela Konevska-Trajkovska, deputy prime minister of FYROM.
