An all-inclusive portrait of Card. Renato Raffaele Martino, the current president of the Papal Council of Justice and Peace, from his origins in the South of Italy to the memory of his family, including his priesthood, his activities carried out in the diplomatic service of the Holy See, his relationships with popes. It was the outcome of an interview signed by Giuseppe Rusconi and published in the latest number of the Italian monthly magazine "Il Consulente Re" (The King Consultant), issued this morning. In particular, the Cardinal took into consideration his activity as permanent observer at UNO, and the "turning point in favour of abortion" recently marked by Amnesty International. "How many battles we have done together, the Holy See with Amnesty, though each one with its competence!", exclaimed Card. Martino, declaring his "disappointment" for the position assumed by the pacifist association, "which first of all, is contradictory with the essence of the organization itself". "How can one fight against death penalty and, at the same time, declare to be in favour of the suppression of a creature living inside the mother, as is also well shown by echographies?", wondered the Cardinal. And he concluded: "One cannot be against the war and then promote abortion".
