THE GOALS OF THE MILLENNIUM: UN CAMPAIGN, JULY 6TH ON THREE EUROPEAN BEACHES "A DIVE AGAINST POVERTY"

On July 6th on three European beaches (one in Italy, one in Spain and one in Portugal), 500 people will wear a T-shirt with the international symbol of the Mid-Term (the mid-term for the achievement of the Goals of the Millennium) and will dive into the water as endorsers of the World Mobilisation against Poverty. This is the event launched by the United Nations Campaign for the Goals of the Millennium, in the attempt to make a new, powerful appeal about the symbolic date of 07.07.07, to raise the awareness of the citizens, the civil organisations, the local bodies and the institutions of hundreds of countries across the world. It will also be a way "to highlight the need to consider the environmental issue a priority as well as inextricably linked to the fight against extreme poverty in the world", explain the promoters. The Italian beach chosen for the "A dive against poverty" campaign is the Aquafan in Riccione. The UN Millennium Campaign, which is now present in over 30 countries, was set up in 2002 to ask the heads of state and government of 189 countries to fulfil the obligations undertaken in September 2000, i.e. to achieve eight Goals of the Millennium by 2015, such as halving world poverty and hunger, ensuring primary education, promoting gender equality, reducing child and mother death rates.
