Commitment against nuclear weapons: it was asked by Benedict XVI yesterday morning, before he introduced the Angelus at Castel Gandolfo, where he arrived on Friday, after a period of rest in peace. The occasion was the 50th anniversary of the coming into force of the Statute of I.A.E.A., the International Agency for Atomic Energy, established with the mandate to "foster and increase the contribute of atomic energy to the causes of peace, health and prosperity all over the world". The Holy See, recalled the Pope, "fully approving the objectives of such body, is a member of that agency ever since its foundation, and it is going on to uphold its activity". "The remarkable changes happened during the last fifty years pointed out the Holy Father show us how more and more urgent and actual the commitment to encourage nonproliferation of nuclear weapons is, at the currently crucial crossroads in which mankind finds itself. It is also fundamental to foster the promotion of a progressive and agreed nuclear disarmament, encouraging the peaceful and safe use of nuclear technology for safe development, respecting environment, and always taking care of the more disadvantaged populations".
