The European Commission declared 2007 the European Year for Equal Opportunities for Everybody, and in this respect, the Security, Freedom and Justice General Direction of the Commission launched a competition yesterday, July 30th, named “The European Union and non-discrimination”, addressed to youth ranging from 12 to 18 years of age, in the 27 member States of the Union. The competition is meant to promote the knowledge of the subjects linked with the principle of non-discrimination illustrated by art. 21 of the Chart of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, through the accomplishment of a poster illustrating them graphically. The final objective is: the young should acquire a more thorough knowledge of the non-discrimination principle, making them able to promote and defend it. The participants, divided in two groups of age (12-14 years and 15-18 years) should make up teams composed of at least 4 young and one adult. The last day for registration is Monday, October 15th, while for sending posters there is time until Wednesday, October 31st, 2007. The teams in the final will be invited to Rome, and in case of selection, they will be invited to the European finals in Brussels, for the final awarding ceremony, as guests of Vice President of the European Commission Franco Frattini.
