RIFUGEES: MSGR. TOMASI (THE HOLY SEE) TO UNO, "THE NEW MARTYRDOM" OF THE CHRISTIANS

According to the representative of the Holy See, it is necessary "to pay attention to this interregional problem by taking into consideration the new developments, starting a systematic study on how protection can be guaranteed, and also developing a specific programme". Obviously, "in the long run, it requires the transformation of the conditions of the countries of origin through higher security, respect of human rights, real political participation, creation of jobs, and a context of peace". A further problem tackled by Msgr. Tomasi was the question "of the refugees in the Middle East, and the worsening of the ethnic cleansing and the conditions of religious minorities". "In particular, the Christians must confront a new era of martyrdom", and "the resources which are necessary for an adequate response to the suffering of Iraqi refugees are not accessible enough". By recalling the recent appeal of Benedict XVI to solidarity with the refugees, Msgr. Tomasi concluded: "Today’s developments of forced transfers, and tomorrow’s consequences of the climate change which will force the people to move, require intellectual creativity and pragmatic action programmes".
