SIR EUROPE: BARROSO (COMMISSION), "STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH BRAZIL"

"This summit is a historical stage in our relationships with Brazil. This partnership renders us two international players strengthening their cooperation in a multitude of common sectors". Today, José Manuel Barroso, president of the Commission, will be together with Portuguese Prime Minister José Sòcrates, during the first summit of the EU and Brazil. The meeting was promoted by the Portuguese government in relation to the historical links between the two countries, and also because Brazil "is one of the States with developing economies" which are "becoming more and more important in the world scenario". In particular, Barroso focussed on two subjects, at the centre of the summit: "fight against poverty and climate change". The summit will take place in Lisbon, and Barroso, Sòcrates and the Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, will take part in it. "Strategic partnership – it is written in a note by the Commission – will have to intensify cooperation in a wide range of sectors, and to strengthen multilateralism", UNO and "promotion of human rights". The EU will also tackle some more subjects, such as renewable energies, stability and development of Latin America".
