BENEDICT XVI: TO THE DOMINICAN CHURCH, "DEFENDING THE FAMILY AND EVANGELISING CULTURE"

"The main goal of our pastoral task must be for the truth on Christ and the truth on man to penetrate even deeper into the different layers of Dominican society", and this job, even if not problem-free, "is developed amidst a people whose spirit is open and sensitive to the Gospel". It was said this morning by the Pope, as he received the Dominican Bishops Conference (11 dioceses, 191 parishes, 440 priests) on their visit ad limina. "It is a fact – went on Benedict XVI – that your country still feels the symptoms of a process of secularisation", but deep down "this people has a deeply Christian soul". In the Dominican Republic, nearly 90% of the population are Catholics. "One of the main goals of the new evangelisation – highlighted the Holy Father – is the family. It is the true ‘domestic Church’, especially when it is the fruit of lively communities, from which come young people who have a sincere bent for the sacrament of marriage". The family is not left alone in its difficulties. The Church urges for "the family to be really the place where one is born, grows and is educated to life". (continued)
