AFRICA: FIRST DEGREES IN MEDICINE AT THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF MOZAMBIQUE (2)

"We thought this day would never come", said the head of the Medical Faculty, Bernard Grosjohan: "It is a great time for us and for all those who have helped us, from Europe and from the United States. Our dream was to et up a new training course, here, in Beira, the city of contradictions, forced to isolation and to the devastations of the war. We wanted to create a Medical Faculty that belonged here and was structurally connected to the Central Hospital. We have made it, and it was worth it. Be a good example for everyone". In Mozambique, estimates speak of 600 doctors for a population of 20 million. Half of them are concentrated in the capital: today there are 13 more. The Medical Faculty of the Catholic University of Mozambique was founded in 2000 in order to train doctors to face the huge medical needs of the central-northern provinces of the country, that have no good training opportunities. So far, the country’s only Medical Faculty was in Maputo, 1,200 kilometres south of Beira.” ” ” “
