SIR EUROPA: RICCARDI (S.EGIDIO) RECALLS SEPTEMBER 11TH AND INVITES PEOPLE TO THE INTERRELIGIOUS MEETING IN NAPLES

"That day aged the young, revealed them the evil and hatred that are in the world, made us all aware of the force of evil as well as of the fact one cannot live without responsibility for the good". This was stated last night by Andrea Riccardi, the founder of Comunità di Sant’Egidio, as he introduced, in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, the vigil of prayer in commemoration of the victims of terrorism, on the occasion of the 6th anniversary of the New York attacks. Recalling that day, he added, "is not an obsession of the memory. Somehow, that day meant entering the new century. A brusque, violent, bloodstained entrance". "The century – he went on – opened on that day with terrorism, but not only that": "it opened with deep solidarity, which overcame differences in politics, culture, mentality. Where evil is plentiful, sometimes good is even more plentiful." The founder of Comunità di Sant’Egidio, after mentioning "John Paul II’s great pain" for that event, recalled the next inter-religious meeting of prayer for peace, which will be hosted in Naples from 21st to 23rd October, an event that "strengthens that community of peace that was challenged on September 11th 2001. We believe – he concluded – that evil cannot win". Info: www.santegidio.org
