71% of Europeans "are interested in the results of medical research", 60% in science and new technology. For 84% of EU citizens, "the greatest cause for concern is the environment". The EU Commission published a survey by Eurobarometer (which involved interviews with 29 thousand citizens of the 27 EU member states, plus Turkey and Croatia) and found out that medical developments "are as interesting as international, economic and social affairs". A survey which also showed that people trust the scientific and medical professions and the research institutes. "This survey by Eurobarometer commented MEP Janez Potoènik shows that the citizens are more and more interested in research, especially in those fields that directly concern them". The "need for information" in this sphere "has certainly to do with the ageing of the population, but it is also encouraging to see younger people being so interested". The purpose of the survey is to "measure the level of attention and information of the European population" in the scientific and medical fields, so as to develop new tools and languages to give better information to and raise the awareness of the population of the EU member states.
