"If there are any two basic factors for the future of Europe, these are our young people and our ability to do research": Janez Potoènik, EU Commissioner for Scientific Research, says he is satisfied for the week devoted to young scholars and "inventors" of Europe which is ending in Valencia today. The Spanish city has hosted over one hundred boys and girls who submitted 81 projects in different areas of knowledge, from astronomy to mathematics, from medicine to the protection of the environment, to social science. Some deserving projects were selected, while the three main prizes (5 thousand euros each) of the nineteenth European Competition of Young Scientists were awarded to three teams, German, Hungarian and Finnish. The other prizes were awarded to young Austrians, Czechs, French and Israelis. The ages of the entrants ranged from 14 to 20: the entrants came from 30 different countries, some outside the EU, including the United State and China. "I hope adds Potoènik this success will encourage these students to continue on the way of discovery and invention".” ” ” “
