BENEDICT XVI: TO THE BISHOPS IN BENIN, "EVALUATE THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF TRADITIONS" (2)

"In the cultural context of your country – said Benedict XVI to Benin bishops, – it is necessary to manifest the presence of the Church through visible signs, pointing out the real sense of its mission among men". Among them, a remarkable place is to be assigned to "fervent and hearty liturgical celebrations", which are "a clear token of faith of the community". "It is thus important – underlined the Pope, – that believers take part in the liturgy in a full, active and fruitful way. To encourage this participation, it is legitimate to refer to some proper attitudes, in line with different cultural contexts, respecting the rules fixed by the Church". However, he pointed out, "with the aim of excluding the introduction into liturgy of the cultural elements which are not compatible with the Christian faith, or of actions leading to misunderstandings, a solid liturgical training must be given to seminarians and priests, allowing them to acquire the knowledge of the foundations, the meaning and the theological value of liturgical rites".
