SIR EUROPA: MEETING IN STRASBOURG BETWEEN THE PORTUGUESE PRESIDENCY AND THE EU PARLIAMENT ON DEATH PENALTY

The European Union will not forgo a worldwide political campaign against death penalty. In parallel with the United National General Assembly that is opening in New York today, the current presidency of the EU Council will explain to the European Parliament, on September 26th, "how it means to implement the decision to call for a universal moratorium on death penalty, which has been strongly promoted by the Parliament" of the 27 member states. The Portuguese Government stated that they want to move on in the direction outlined by Strasbourg Parliament, which has implemented two resolutions this year (in February and April), asking the Presidency to submit a resolution "before the end of the sixty-first session of the UN Assembly". In a note from Parliament, which illustrates the agenda of the plenary session that is going to start in the Alsatian city in the afternoon, they write: "During the debate, the controversy aroused by the Polish Government which opposed to the proclamation of the European Day against Death Penalty, the first of which, supported by Parliament, should have been held on October 10th, might also be discussed".
