MYANMAR: UNO, BAN KI-MOON SENDS ONE OF HIS REPRESENTATIVES

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon decided to send Ibrahim Gambari, his special envoy in the region, to Myanmar. Moreover, he asked the authorities of the Asian country "to adjust its response to the wave of the ongoing peaceful protests in an adequate way". Taking into consideration the reports about the use of force during repressions, Ban pointed out that "violent repression has the only effect of undermining the peace, stability and prosperity perspectives in the region". The Secretary General – who met the Burma Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nyan Win, alongside the works of the General Assembly – asked the authorities of the country to collaborate with Ibrahim Gambari to full extent, "to take advantage of UNO’s readiness to foster the process of national reconciliation through dialogue". UNO High Commissioner for human rights, Louise Arbour, also expressed his "preoccupation" for the situation of the demonstrators, and made an appeal to Burma authorities, asking them "to allow peaceful expression of dissent in the country, thus respecting, with their response, the principles of international law, which forbids the excessive use of force as well as all kind of arbitrary detention". Louise Arbour expressed preoccupation also for the arrested, and in particular, for the situation of the opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
