SIR EUROPE: FINAL MESSAGE FROM SIBIU; MSGR. GIORDANO (CCEE), "GOING INTO THE SUBJECT OF LIFE TOGETHER WITH URGENCY"

The note in the margin, appearing in the text of the final message of the Third European Ecumenical Assembly (4-9 September) "clearly shows the fact that there is no full agreement on the subject of life among all Christian communities". Thus, in an interview with SIR, Msgr. Aldo Giordano, secretary general of CCEE (Council of the European Episcopal Conferences, which promoted the event, together with the Conference of European Churches), explained how they reached the conclusive version of the text. "The note alongside the message, first of all, expresses a difficult situation, emerging in the drawing up of the message". "This is painful, but it must become an opportunity to deepen this subject together with urgency, for it is a delicate and decisive subject, and we should have a clear and common position for the goodness of the human person. Our responsibility for this question is really serious". "The challenge of this text – added Msgr. Giordano – was exactly having it drawn up during the assembly". "This text was born with many hours of night work". The workshop entrusted with the drawing up of the message "had few hours to try and integrate at least one hundred amendments proposed during the assembly, either orally or by writing". "In my opinion – concluded Giordano, – in future, we shall have to take into consideration again, and seriously, the advisability of messages elaborated in such way".
