SIR EUROPE: ENGLISH BISHOPS, AN INITIATIVE TO "REACH THE MISSING"

"Where are you now?" This is the name of a national initiative launched by the English Bishops to "reach the dozens of thousands of people" who have been christened in England and Wales but "very rarely" go to Mass. Raising the "awareness of the faithful" about the "essential role that everyone plays in inviting their friends and family to go to Church again" is the aim of the initiative, which is going to start on September 16th and will have its highlight at the beginning of Advent, with a national media campaign called "Come back home for Christmas". "My dear friend, I ask you to take part in this initiative", writes card. Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, to the Catholic parishes: "We all know someone who doesn’t go to Mass any more. In an unbiased attitude, as the Body of Christ, let’s go get back the lost sheep with a message of love, acceptance, warmth and reconciliation". In England, states mgr. Keith Barltrop, director of the Catholic Agency in Support of Evangelisation (Case), which promoted the initiative, "in many families there are members who, for different reasons, no longer go to Mass: some have lost contact during their teenage years, others after a failed marriage, others have had difficult experiences with the Catholic community".
