SIR EUROPE: ITALY, AN APPEAL TO SIBIU FOR A EUROEPAN DAY OF CHRISTIAN-ISLAMIC DIALOGUE

"Establishing a day of Christian-Islamic dialogue at European level": this is the appeal made by the Committee which organised the sixth ecumenical day of Christian-Islamic dialogue to the delegates of the Third European Ecumenical Assembly, which opens in Sibiu (Romania) tomorrow, about "The light of Christ enlightens everybody. Hope of renewal and unity in Europe". "In greeting and wishing the best to all the delegations that until September 9th will try to revive ecumenism in Europe, overcoming the serious difficulties that the ecumenical process is experiencing, we would like to draw to their attention – write the signers of the appeal – the need to put the dialogue with the other religions at the centre of such meeting. We are convinced that Christian ecumenism can be strengthened if it can open up to dialogue with the other religions". According to the Committee, "particularly urgent, in light of the international situation we are going through, is dialogue with Islam, which is essential to stop the war and build a world of peace". For this reason and in the run-up to the sixth ecumenical day of Christian-Islamic dialogue that will be celebrated in Italy on October 5th, "we appeal to the delegations gathered in Sibiu, so that a similar Day with Islam be established at a European level".
