SIBIU – EEA3: BENEDICT XVI, CONFIDENTLY TOWARDS "THE COMMUNION AND UNITY OF CHRISTIANS"

"Commitment to the search for the visible unity of all Christians is essential, so that the Light of Christ may shine on all men": this was stated by Benedict XVI in the Message he sent today to card. Peter Erdö, president of the Council of European Bishops Conferences (Ccee), and to the pastor Jean-Arnold de Clermont, president of the Conference of European Churches (Kek), on the occasion of the Third European Ecumenical Assembly that opened last night in Sibiu (Romania) about "The Light of Christ enlightens everyone. Hope of renewal and unity in Europe" (until 9th September). In expressing the wish that "this important meeting" may speed up "the ecumenical journey towards the re-composition of the full and visible unity of all Christians", the Pope recalls: "This is a pastoral priority that I have wished to highlight since the beginning of my Pontificate". In recalling the commitment taken in this sense by the Catholic Church since the Second Vatican Council, Benedict XVI insists that, using John Paul II’s words, "the Catholic Church will confidently move on along the way of the communion and unity of Christians, a way that is certainly difficult but which is the bearer of great joy".
