SIBIU – EEA3: BENEDICT XVI, "CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROGRESS OF EUROPE"

"We Christians – exhorts the Pontiff – must be aware of the task we have been entrusted with", bringing the "voice of Christ to Europe and to the world". "It is up to us", then, "to make the Light of Christ shine on today’s men and women: not our own light – he explains – but the Light of Christ". The Pope also invited people to "contribute to a real progress of Europe, in the East and in the West", and wished that the Assembly of Sibiu may offer "precious ideas to continue intensifying the specific bent of Europe, ideas that must help us build a better future for its people" and may "create meeting spaces for unity in legitimate diversity". In a climate of mutual trust and "in the awareness that our common roots are much deeper than our divisions – concludes Benedict XVI –, we can break a false self-sufficiency and overcome our differences", experiencing "the common foundation of our faith".
