INTER-RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE: "CHARTER OF MUSLIMS"; ALLIEVI, "WAITING TO APPRECIATE ITS IMPACT"

A Charter to list "the guidelines" of Islam for a "better understanding" of Islam and as a "foundation for the integration of Muslims in European society". This is the opening statement of intent of the "Muslims of Europe Charter". which will be presented at Parliament today by the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe. The text – according to the document – is the result of a time-consuming work, which began in 2000 and which from now on "will be open to any organisation which wants to adopt it". The Charter insists on the respect of Islam for all human beings, the equality between men and women, the family based on marriage, the rejection of violence and terrorism. The section about the presence of Muslims in society asserts the "principle of neutrality of the State in religious matters" and the need to "successfully fit in with one’s society based on a harmonious balance between the preservation of one’s Muslim identity and one’s rights of citizenship".
