BENEDICT XVI: AUDIENCE, "THEN, LET’S MOVE ON TOGETHER"

” “The "greatest honour of glory" is that of "killing the war with the word, instead of killing the men with the sword, and procuring or maintaining peace with peace, not with war". It was said by the Pope during today’s general audience, the second one focussed on the figure of Saint Augustine. The Holy Father highlighted that the last years of his life were years of "extraordinary intellectual activity", in which the Bishop of Hippo "completed some important works, started new and no less demanding ones, held public debates with the heretics, promoted peace in the African provinces besieged by the barbarian tribes from the south". In writing to Count Darius, who had gone to Africa to "settle the divergence" between Count Boniface and the Imperial Court, Augustine – highlighted the Pope, as he mentioned a very relevant sentence – said to him: "Even those who fight, if they are good, no doubt pursue peace, but at the cost of shedding blood. You, on the contrary, have been sent just to prevent them trying to shed anyone’s blood". And he went back to this thought at the end of the meeting with an invitation: "Then, let’s move on together".” “
