EU: JANSA (EU COUNCIL), "THERE WILL BE NO NEW WAR IN THE BALKANS"

The programmatic points listed by Janez Jansa at Strasbourg’s Parliament "include many urgent matters of foreign policy" (the Middle East and Africa, to begin with) "as well as the problems of the neighbourhood policy", first and foremost the "situation in the Western Balkans". The current president of the EU dwells on Kosovo: "There will be no new war in the Balkans – he states as he replies to a journalist –. The recent history, the victims, the refugees who lost their homes are a warning to us. To us and to all of Europe. I think the platform taken by the EU last December is excellent, and now we are waiting for the establishment of the European mission to Kosovo to guide the transition and prevent any form of conflict". Jansa insists on "the key role of the EU in the Balkans" and "the commitment to avoiding unilateral decisions" (the Declaration of Independence of Pristina), "which would certainly complicate the current scenario". Then, he speaks at length of 2008, the Year of Intercultural Dialogue: "The EU must respond to the global challenges, such as economic competition and terrorism. It can do it, provided it does not neglect dialogue between different cultures and peoples within and without its borders".
