YOUTH: THE "EUROPE DIARY 2008/2009" FREE FOR SCHOOLS, FROM THE EU

"Saying how important youth are for Europe is not enough. We must prove it". Meglena Kuneva, commissioner for consumers’ defence, presents an initiative which the EU has been carrying out in collaboration with the Generation Europe Foundation since 2004. It is the "Europe School Diary 2008/2009", printed in almost three million copies in the 23 languages of the European Union, which may be ordered freely by schools, in accordance with the principle "arrived first, served first". The diary is meant for students ranging from 15 to 18 years of age. It became a tradition exploited by thousands of institutes. "Community subjects are dealt with" (institutions, policies, initiatives for the young), "as well as social questions concerning consumers, such as alimentation, sustainable consumption, climate change and the dangers one may meet by surfing the Web". In this sense, Kuneva thinks that the Diary is a means to pay attention to young generations. The diary "was carried out in collaboration with national partners, so as to adapt its contents to national public". Together with the Diary, a teacher’s kit is also distributed.
