BENEDICT XVI: ECUMENICAL DIALOGUE IS ONE OF THE "GREAT TASKS" OF THE CHURCH

Ecumenical dialogue is one of the "great tasks of the ecclesial community in contemporary world", and must be animated by the Word of God rather than by words of "human knowledge". It was pointed out by Pope Benedict XVI this morning, while he met the members of the Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Bishop Synod, in preparation to the General Ordinary Assembly summoned from next 5th to 26th October on the subject: "The Word of God in the life and mission of the Church". "The ecumenical dialogue – said the Pope – cannot rely on words of human knowledge or witty, strategic expedients, but must be solely animated by constant reference to the original Word, which God delivered to his Church for reading, interpreting and living it through the Communion". Then, Benedict XVI pointed out the figure of St. Paul as model. St. Paul is going to be venerated this year, thanks to the celebration of the Pauline Year. The Pope said: "may his example encourage everybody to welcome the Word of Salvation and use it in daily life, following Christ faithfully".
