BENEDICT XVI: AUDIENCE, PRAYER AT THE "HEART" OF THE WHOLE ECUMENICAL JOURNEY (3)

” “"Common prayer is not a volunteer or merely sociological act, it is the expression of the faith that brings together all the disciples of Christ". It was explained by the Pope, who highlighted that, through "common prayer", as specially recommended by the Council, "the Christian communities are placed together in front of the Lord and, by becoming aware of the contradictions generated by divisions, show the will to obey His will by confidently resorting to His almighty help". Since the Council – this is the Pope’s balance of the ecumenical journey –, the Catholic Church "has come into contact with the different Churches and ecclesial communities of the East and West, through different forms of dialogue, facing with each one those theological and historical problems that have arisen over the centuries and that have become factors of division. The Lord made such friendly contacts improve our mutual acquaintance, we have intensified communion by also explaining the perception of the problems that remain open and that stir up divisions". Hence the relevance of the invitation to "pray indefatigably" that Saint Paul made to the first Christians, to overcome "differences" and "be patient with everyone, steer clear from paying evil back with evil, and seek instead everyone’s good and remain happy in every circumstance".” “
