"The ideas, the lifestyles, the laws, the overall attitudes of the society in which we live and the image it gives of itself through the mass media have a great influence on the education of the new generations, in good but often in bad as well". This warning comes from the Pope, in his letter on education that was published today. "Society Benedict XVI, however, specified is not an abstraction; in the end, it is us": hence the need "of the contributions of all of us, of every person, family or social group, for society to become a more favourable place of education, to start from this city of Rome". In his letter, the Holy Father points to "some common needs for a genuine education", which cannot be reduced "to giving some notions and information" but must embrace "the big question about the truth, especially that truth that can act as guidance in life". "Finding the right balance between freedom and discipline": this is, according to the Pope, "maybe the most awkward point of all educational work". "Without rules of behaviour or life, applied day by day even to the smallest things stated the Pontiff , one’s character will not be moulded, and one will not be ready to face challenges"; even suffering is actually "part of the truth of our life".
